In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, Mount Union’s men’s 1,600-meter relay team has once again etched their name in the annals of collegiate track and field history. The quartet of Matthew McBride, Jared Storm, Tyler Gill, and Justin Notch showcased their exceptional talent at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, securing their sixth national title with a remarkable time of 3:09.44.
A Photo Finish Victory
The Purple Raiders’ victory was nothing short of spectacular, as they edged out runner-up Rowan by a mere 58 hundredths of a second. This nail-biting finish not only demonstrated the team’s physical capabilities but also their mental fortitude under pressure. It marked a triumphant return to the top of the podium for Mount Union, their first national title in this event since 2018.
Individual Accolades
Beyond their relay success, McBride and Storm also shone in individual events. McBride secured a commendable fourth place in the 400 meters with a time of 46.87 seconds, while Storm followed closely, finishing seventh at 47.77 seconds. These performances earned them All-America honors, further cementing Mount Union’s reputation as a powerhouse in track and field.
Team Success and Legacy
The Purple Raiders’ consistent excellence was evident as they secured a top-10 finish in the team standings for the fifth consecutive year, landing in seventh place with 25 points. This achievement speaks volumes about the program’s depth and the coaching staff’s ability to nurture talent year after year.
Women’s Team Shines
Not to be outdone, the Mount Union women’s team also left their mark on the championship. The 1,600-meter relay team of Madison Myers, Kennady Gibbins, Kennady Wight, and Mary Mason broke the school record with their fourth-place finish, clocking in at 3:43.88. Myers added to her accolades with a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, while Britt McCauley showed her grit in the 1,500-meter final, securing eighth place.
